I have decided to break it up to go over two weeks. I don't know about your toddler, but mine has a problem staying still for one page of little pictures, so I am not going to push my luck.

I thought I would read the story up until Zeezrom becomes converted. A good theme from this story is "Following the Promptings of the Holy Ghost". Missionary work would also be a good fall back theme. There's nothing like marching around the room singing <a href="http://www.lds.org/churchmusic/detailmusicPlayer/index.html?searchlanguage=1&searchcollection=2&searchseqstart=169&searchsubseqstart=%20&searchseqend=169&searchsubseqend=ZZZ"target="blank">"I Hope They Call Me on a Mission" a couple of times to raise the spirit!! After much thought I also came up with perseverance, bearing your testimony and personal revelation.

Amulek invited Alma back to his place for dinner. Invite the Elders over for dinner and have your toddler "help" make dinner. As you make dinner together, discuss how the Holy Ghost prompted Amulek to find Alma. As such I have decided to stop with the weekly posts.

I will try to get through the Book of Mormon Stories chapters still, but it will certainly be at my own pace. If any of you lovely readers feel that you would like to take on some posting duties (ie. we could switch off weeks) then I would love to hear from you!

Thank you so much for being my loyal readers. I have really enjoyed being able to help out and encourage other toddler mothers. More than anything this blog has helped me implement a great reading schedule for LQ and me.Helhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024471761531493995noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1924178612275504150.post-46399564926688448722009-09-18T22:18:00.003+10:002009-09-21T21:16:09.740+10:00Week 21: Chapter 21 - The AmlicitesBook of Mormon Stories
Chapter 21: The Amlicites

Again, these Nephites were blessed because of their righteousness. I thought I would share that email with you.

A bit of background before you read: As you may have guessed (from my funny spelling) I am Australian. I am married to an American. I was intrigued with the amount of passion many Americans had toward the recent presidential election. I have no particular bias toward any political party because I have not lived in America long enough to know which party believes what. So please read the email knowing I am not saying that one political party is more like the Amlicites!!

Dear Mom,

I find it interesting that only a day after the American Presidential election I should be reading Alma 2. I was inspired to share with you my thoughts as Dal has mentioned you are concerned about the uncertain future that we face.

Chapter 2 of Alma starts with Amlici stirring up the hearts of those around him and gaining a great support from many of the Nephites who want to make him king. It then goes on to say that the righteous Nephites were ALARMED that they might actually be subject to Amlici because there were so many people who liked him. But as Mosiah had decreed that all things be done according to the "voice of the people", they all came to together to vote on whether Amlici should be King or not.

It is interesting to note that in verse five there is a cross reference, after the mentioning of "much dispute and wonderful contentions", to 3 Nephi 11:29. I can imagine the many presidential debates that went on during that time! But Heavenly Father wants us to know that we can have a democracy WITHOUT contention, because contention is of the devil.

To the Nephites relief, Amlici is voted out. But this doesn't stop him. He gathers his MANY supporters together and raises an army against the Nephites. They go to battle and it looks like the Nephites are going to lose, but in verse 17 and 18 we see that the Lord strengthens the Nephites because of their faithfulness. Again in verse 28 he strengthens them in their faithfulness and prayers and then in verse 30 and 31 we see that Alma was strengthened because of his faithfulness.

I think Heavenly Father wants us to know that regardless of who is leading us or what our current political status, he will protect those saints that are faithful and trust in Him. It seems that chapter two is only the beginning of a long history of battles and wars and there are many Nephites who do die (I don't think that will happen to any of us soon!).... BUT the main theme of chapter two in Alma seems to be that the faithful will conquer, even when we are in the minority.

What a lovely way to start a beautiful day, with words of encouragement from my loving Heavenly Father!Helhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024471761531493995noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1924178612275504150.post-55946526910645541172009-09-02T12:34:00.003+10:002009-09-02T12:43:15.627+10:00A Neat SuggestionEmily from Productive Parenting sent me an email with a fantastic idea for reading and memorising scriptures:

"One idea I’ve done with my kids is to make a ‘heart chart.’ With a big piece of construction paper I cut the shape of a heart then we glued 8-10 envelopes to it and in each envelope we put a scripture passage. Each week one of the children picks a new verse from an envelope on the heart chart for us to focus on for the week. By the end of the week it is memorized simply by focusing on the verse and applying it to different situations that arise throughout the week! "

Not only did she come up with this great suggestion, Emily also has a website www.productiveparenting.com. I have signed up for the daily emails that give me activity suggestions specific to LQ's age. I love it! I want to know how you find the cool ideas you post. What kind of search do you do?"

Considering my lack of posting recently, I am sure that all of you are well ahead of me now in your scripture reading and I thought that it would be good idea to let you know how I find all my activities that I find each week. That way, you can carry on without me and I wont feel guilty every time I see that I am only up to chapter 19 and Sare is up to chapter 29!!!! (I am SO sorry Sare!)

First things first. See my list of Websites I Reference in the side bar there.... just under the long-winded blurb about the blog. Yep... the first website listed is the one I frequent most often. If you go to friend.lds.org you will see on the right side of the page there is an option to search The Friend.

I started at friend.lds.org mostly just searching through the sharing time ideas and then adapting them to fit a toddler's standard. This kind of fell dead a few posts ago when I couldn't find anything that I could adapt.

Then I figured I could type in the search box, "For Little Friends (and then my topic)". Then all I got was all the fun activities and stories specifically designed for littler people.

Some of my ideas also come from reading the stories in The Friend that are related to my topic. The idea of going on a picnic and letting your toddler carry the heavy bag, then lifting it to show how Heavenly Father lifts our burdens.... that idea came from a story that I read in The Friend.

Of course if you go to the Primary Manuals link you will find some wonderful ideas and activities particularly in the Nursery Manual. Although, I find that I only go to this resource if I have completely bled The Friend dry!

If your toddler is definitely into colouring then I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the LDS Family Fun (also known as Living Scriptures) website. I have mentioned before that they require a log in, but it is free to sign up and you get access to all their activity booklets. HOURS of colouring fun to be had there. If you can't find anything there, then the LDS Clipart link will have pretty much anything else you are looking for.

Two things that are important to remember:

I always try to adapt what we do in our every day play to incorporate a gospel message. Marching around banging instruments is definitely the flavour of the week for us. So singing as many marching Primary songs that go along with our theme works!

It helps to read the story and choose a theme before the week starts. That way you have a direction for your activities.

I hoped this has helped somewhat. Now you can all send me your wonderful ideas that you have been saving up to tell me!!Helhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024471761531493995noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1924178612275504150.post-14702071025993445352009-08-03T15:46:00.004+10:002009-08-23T22:34:38.290+10:00Week 19: Chapter 19 - The Sons of Mosiah Become MissionariesBook of Mormon Stories
Chapter 19: The Sons of Mosiah Become Missionaries

As soon as I started reading this story I began humming "I Want to be a Missionary Now". I guess I have a bit of a soft spot for wayward children, having been one myself. I know that Heavenly Father looked out for me during that difficult period of my life. I can only imagine the pain I put my parents through, but I am so grateful that regardless of what I did, my mum would always be ready with a hug.

So to read of Alma, King Mosiah and the many people who were being persecuted actually praying for those wayward boys just warms my heart. But enough about me... let's talk about:

Forgiveness

Repentance

Prayer and Fasting

Heavenly Father's Love for ALL His children

All good things to talk about to your toddler as you read this story to him/her. As mentioned in my previous post, this story is similar to King Limhi and his people escaping. The big difference being that Alma's people were already doing the right thing to begin with. They also didn't have to get the Lamanites drunk - they just fell asleep!

I love the scriptures in this story that tell how the people prayed in their hearts and Heavenly Father made their burdens light. I gotta tell you, I know that feeling of having my burdens made light - it's a nice feeling. Because I particularly like those verses, I will read with LQ Mosiah 24:10-15.

Another verse in Mosiah 24 mentions that after the Lord delivered Alma and His People from bondage everyone who could, lifted up their voice in praise and thanksgiving. Giving thanks could definitely be a good theme for the week. So I have thought of and found activities that will go along with the theme of giving thanks.

Sing "Children All Over The World" (Children's Songbook pg #16)

Sing "Thanks to Our Father" (Children's Songbook pg #20)

Behold Your Little Ones: Nursery Manual has a lesson on Thankfulness - there is a great colouring activity that we will definitely be using this week.

Go on a picnic and pack a backpack for your toddler. Make it heavy enough for them to realise when you lift it a little bit. Explain to them as you are lifting it that you are easing their burden just like Heavenly Father eased the burdens of the People of Alma.

During dinner each day this week have each family member tell what they are grateful for.

You can use last week's suggestions for the prayer part of the story

Go for a walk and point out all the things you are thankful for.

The Friend Activities:

November 2008 - Has a WONDERFUL matching game for things we are thankful for. The Sharing Time suggestions recommend that you discuss why you are thankful for the particular blessing when it is matched (you know I LOVE, love, LOVE matching games).

I just wanted to point out that whatever activity you choose to do, make sure that while you are doing it point out the similarities between what you are doing and the story that you read each day. It is through these small "chats" that your toddler will learn that he/she can learn important lessons from reading scriptures and that it is not just a boring thing to do.

On a different note, I have had some wonderful emails and comments recently and I just wanted to thank you for them. I have recently been in a blogging slump (if you haven't noticed) and it is the comments and emails that have kept me going. Any activities that you can think of that will help your toddler to remember to choose the right, listen to the prophets or that teaches him/her to pray will go along nicely with the story. But if you don't read this paragraph I am sure you will be none the wiser.

This week Alma teaches and baptizes a slew of people. I have just taught a lesson in Primary about the blessings of being baptised that included the story of Alma teaching and baptising. The blessings included: 1) We become members of Jesus Christ's church; 2) We get the gift of the Holy Ghost; and 3) Heavenly Father forgives us.

These important blessings are outlined in Alma's story and would definitely be a great guideline for teaching the story this week.

Other activities that you may want to do:

Help your child realise the importance of writing in his/her journal. After hearing what Abinadi had to say, Alma immediately wrote down everything that had been said. I think a perfect activity to complement Abinadi's story is to make up some flash cards with the pictures of the First Presidency and the 12 Apostles. I was a bit reluctant to do anything like that on the blog that was really only started to give me an extra incentive to continue on with LQ's scripture reading. Moral dilemma and all that... I soon got over my moral dilemma and realised I could not only help Awnya out, but I could also get you guys another chance to win something!!

I know, I know... I am fantastic, you can thank me later.

Just this week I received some Book of Mormon felt stories to help with our scripture studies. Awnya sent me Nephi and the Brass Plates and Samuel the Lamanite.

Upon opening our special package I immediately noticed how beautifully rich the colours are on the felt. The side of the felt that is printed on is also VERY soft and I will make LQ play with them just so I can touch the felt. I know... weird! I am quite certain that the Quiet Books could be doubled up as a VERY nice pillow (if needed during church).

I was very excited that we got the story of Nephi and the Brass Plates, because just this Sunday gone, I was supposed to tell that particular story in my class. My class consists of 10 very boisterous 4 & 5 year olds. EEEEK! Each week I seem to outdo myself in creating an interesting way of telling what seems to be the longest story ever told. I have actually gone through quite a few of the archives on this blog and used a few of the activities that I had found. Hooray for me.

Back to the Felt Story. I can't tell you how relieved I was, when my class sat still (or as still as any five year old will sit) through the entire story of Nephi and the Brass Plates. I honestly haven't been able to capture their attention as well with any other prop. BUT - the all important question is: How did I go with teaching the scripture stories to LQ?

It was incredible! I wasn't sure if LQ would be into it, but as I told a summarised version of Nephi and the Brass Plates I handed each character to LQ to place on the felt board. She loved that she could tell the story in her own creative way. And once again, I was able to get through the ENTIRE story. SUCCESS! The felt even held up after LQ decided that it was more fun scrunching them and then throwing them into the air.

Would you like to be included in the chance to win a Mystery Story worth $17.00?

Go to Awnya's website www.time4felt.com. Check out her products - it is ok if you are there for a while, she has a LOT of fantastic products - and then come back here and leave a comment telling me which product you like the best. I have my eye on the LDS Book of Mormon collection, but until we move out of the whole student budget thing, I may just be content with the Book of Mormon Activity Book. Awnya even offers a cheaper alternative by selling the pieces uncut (you cut them yourself).

Well, what are you waiting for? Get on over to Time4Felt. Spread the word by posting about this competition on your blog (let me know in an extra comment) and I will give you an extra chance to win.

Time4Felt will definitely enhance your toddler's scripture study time.

Competition ends Midnight Monday 18th May 2009 (Australian Eastern Standard Time). I apologise profusely. My only excuse is that LQ turned 2 today and I have been tied up doing stuff for her the past few days. She is officially an American citizen now which we are all excited about.

After reading through this week's story, I think that a great theme that we can study is testimony. Jacob bears his testimony to the people of Nephi and also to Sherem. Jacob 7:11 - "... Behold I say unto you that none of the prophets have written, nor prophesied, save they have spoken concerning this Christ."

So any activities that involve bearing my testimony or having LQ bear her testimony are going to be it. Because it is a tough thing for a little one that can barely speak to do, I have decided that we probably only have one or two activities that we do over and over throughout the week. One of which is to sing "I Belong to the Church of Jesus Christ".

This is a nice short story about a little five year old bearing her testimony.

This "Testimony Glove" is a great idea.

I have to admit... a lot of my recent ideas have gone unused because LQ is enjoying sitting with me and flicking through my scriptures as I read a scripture to her. Lucky for LQ... she doesn't have to deal with Isaiah JUST yet.

Of course, this means that I can pick out some wonderful scriptures to read to LQ this week. One of those scriptures will be 1 Nephi 19:23

I encourage you to go through the last part of 1 Nephi, 2 Nephi and the first chapter of Jacob and pick out your favourite scriptures to read to your child. LQ really believes she is getting a special treat when I read to her from the scriptures. She isn't allowed to touch mummy's scriptures otherwise. It's nice that she has that excitement.

The story this week focuses on the Nephites setting up and the Lamanites being cursed. I thought of some fun activities that tie in with those themes.

Plant some seeds and watch them grow (get that quick growing grass seed... toddlers attention span and all that)

Set up a tent in your living room

Tame wild beasts

Search for gold and silver in the sandbox

Build an altar with blocks (my favourite because it's so simple)

Build a temple with blocks or recycled boxes

Sing the second verse of "Love is Spoken Here" (Children's Songbook, pg 90)

Talk about Lehi blessing his sons and then relate to your child the importance of the priesthood. This lesson from the new nursery manual has a colouring activity that explains how the priesthood is used.

The Living Scriptures "Journey to the Promised Land" activity booklet has a few pages at the end that relate to arriving in the Promised Land.

Talk about the different types of homes the Nephites lived in (tents, ship, houses) and then sing "Home" (Children's Songbook pg 192)

I know some of these are a stretch, but because the chapter spans such a huge amount of scripture, I really think you could slot in any subject you would like your toddler to learn. If you wanted to attempt Isaiah you could even talk about Christ's coming, etc.

If you have a particular problem or just need a sounding board for your own ideas for your toddler, send me a comment or an email. Hopefully I can help you out.Helhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024471761531493995noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1924178612275504150.post-70225661069694607592009-04-13T20:25:00.005+10:002009-04-13T21:37:31.768+10:00Week 9: Chapter 8 - Crossing the SeaThe Book of Mormon
Chapter 8: Crossing the Sea

"Nevertheless, I did look unto my God, and I did apraise him all the day long; and I did not murmur against the Lord because of mine afflictions." 1 Nephi 18:16

There are a few scriptures in this weeks reading that I really enjoyed. We have decided to visit LQ's new cousin, Audrey and will be staying with Audrey and family until this Sunday.

We will be lucky to get a scripture read each day, because there will be too many Audrey cuddles to be had. So this week's scripture reading plan will be postponed until next week.

Happy Scripture reading!Helhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024471761531493995noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1924178612275504150.post-74881484946930470682009-03-31T13:17:00.003+11:002009-03-31T14:00:35.482+11:00Week 7: Chapter 7 - Building the ShipThe Book of Mormon
Chapter 7: Building the Ship

My apologies for the post delay this week. LQ and I have already started our scriptures for this week, but another project has consumed all my "LQ nap" time. So today I made myself sit down and work out what else LQ and I are going to do this week for scripture study.

LQ is still responding well to the quicktime version of the stories. Dal was making fun of them last night - whatever works I say. LQ also enjoyed flicking through my scriptures this morning while I explained to her that Heavenly Father blesses us when we keep the commandments.

This week Nephi and his family are building a ship. His brothers are being naughty again and Nephi gets to shock his brothers by touching them. I had a thought for an object lesson, I could build up a bit of static electricity and let LQ have it..... Bordering on child abuse, you say? Ok, I may let that idea slide then. Other non-abusive activity ideas include:

Using blocks to build a boat

"Sewing" a sail for the boat (you can make a sail out of cardboard and punch holes around the edge. Then your toddler can have fun sewing with string or wool)

The Living Scriptures has an activity book to go along with their dvd "Journey to the Promised Land". Remember you can download these activity books for free if you register (for free). There are a few colouring pages that can be used for this particular story.

Ideas from the Friend:

March 1992 - Sharing Time: Nephi Builds a Ship (diorama)

March 1988 - Nephi Builds a Ship - you could do as the article suggests, or you could also use the pictures for a matching card game.

November 2000 - Journey to the Promised Land - This one is too old for Toddlers but is a great game to play with the entire family

My favourite scripture from 1 Nephi 17 is verse 3. I have been reading this one to LQ over the last two days. It is easy to summarize and it has a great message to it.

As always,... I am eager to know how you are doing. Send me an email sometime.Helhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024471761531493995noreply@blogger.com4
