President Hinckley has counseled parents: “Read to your children. Read the story of the Son of God. Read to them from the New Testament. Read to them from the Book of Mormon. It will take time, and you are very busy, but it will prove to be a great blessing in your lives as well as in their lives. And there will grow in their hearts a great love for the Savior of the world, the only perfect man who walked the earth. He will become to them a very real living being, and His great atoning sacrifice as they grow to manhood and womanhood, will take on a new and more glorious meaning in their lives” (quoted in Church News, 6 Dec. 1997, 2)

Week 4: Chapter 4 - The Brass Plates

The Book of Mormon
Chapter 4 - The Brass Plates

Finally we get some action! This is a bit of a long story, but the sentences that are associated with each picture are quite short, so I am hoping that the entire story will hold LQ's attention. I will use the downloaded "movie" again because it worked so well last week.

This week's plan includes only reading one scripture this week. I will concentrate on 1 Nephi 3:7 "I will go and do, etc." I am planning on reading this to LQ every day in the hopes that she will become very familiar with it.

While discussing the story with LQ I am also going to have her do the following activities:
  • Colouring pages from the living scriptures
  • Make the brass plates from orange cardboard and pipe cleaners
  • Make and use paper swords
  • Dress up and pretend to be Laban like Nephi did
  • "Read" Old Testament stories from our made up Brass Plates like Lehi did
I have also found a few related activities in the Friend that would suit older children:

September 1996 - Brass Plates Code
March 2004 - Nephi and the Brass Plates
February 1996 - Nephi gets the Brass Plates (this could be used as a matching game for your toddler)

If you are doing any of these activities or have found something that works really well for you, let me know. I'd love to hear from you - and you, Denae ;)

  1. OK, we have GOT to get the word out that you're doing this over here. Because it is so great and people just don't know about it.

I notice that you're collecting followers on your other blog (and you deserve them; you're too clever!) so it's time for some shameless promotion.

Perhaps you could link to this one, with an incentive of offering some kind of FHE kit or maybe a CD of all the art or stories you've used so far as a reward for signing on as a follower. I know Mona at "Mona's Musings" sends all her new followers a CD of her music.

Meanwhile start a post on this blog with something like FREE GIVEAWAY, AND SALVATION FOR YOUR KIDS!! That's the line that will show up on the MMB page!! That should bring in some Curious Georges!

This is just too good an idea to only have the likes of me reading along.
