President Hinckley has counseled parents: “Read to your children. Read the story of the Son of God. Read to them from the New Testament. Read to them from the Book of Mormon. It will take time, and you are very busy, but it will prove to be a great blessing in your lives as well as in their lives. And there will grow in their hearts a great love for the Savior of the world, the only perfect man who walked the earth. He will become to them a very real living being, and His great atoning sacrifice as they grow to manhood and womanhood, will take on a new and more glorious meaning in their lives” (quoted in Church News, 6 Dec. 1997, 2)

Day 5 - Just Reading!

Today I am going over the entire story with LQ one more time. I will also read to her the scripture from James that Joseph Smith read, you know "if any of you lack wisdom... blah, blah, blah."

Remember to make it exciting!

  1. That's the spirit! Years ago I taught the 3-year olds in Primary. This after having spent 10 years teaching Gospel Doctrine. To say the methodology was 'different' is to understate it in epic terms.

What I discovered was that 'pacing' with little ones is a 1-1 ratio: One minute of attention for every year of age. So instead of a 10-minute discussion about the Creation, we would talk for 30 seconds about how Heavenly Father made oceans, and then have a little commercial about "Finding Nemo", and then talk about how HF created Nemo, too, and then discuss that HF only sort of created Buzz Lightyear, and then color a picture of a tree, and then dance a bit....

If I just introduced a topic, with one or two visuals and one or two activities, and then made sure to reference the topic as often as I could throughout the lesson, it seemed to get the job done.

With your experience in Primary, I see you doing this a MILLION times better than my poor self, and doing it all week long with your very lucky LQ. You are going to become a wonderful resource to your readers, Helen! I'll mention this blog on mine as soon as you're ready for some publicity, OK? (That's right, another 5 people will know about it then, because I'm THAT famous...)
